Rat Rescue :: Exercise Wheels for Rats

Exercise Wheels for Rats

It may seem like a joke, but wire exercise wheels for small animals really are dangerous! At CavyRescue we see a lot of small furries who have been injured while using one of these wheels. Injuries range from fractured paws, severed tails to several hamsters who have, horrifically, had broken necks.

Why wire wheels are still promoted in pet shops is beyond us!
While exercise wheels are necessary for stopping boredom and helping an animal keep active, there are ways you can minimize injuries or even death!

Rat Wodent Wheels

Rodents are attracted to the wheel's entry holes - which also offer a really nifty effect when watching them run. Hamsters avoid broken legs and strangulations. Even rats love wheels if they don't get their feet hurt and their tails whacked by unsafe axle

There are many plastic exercise wheels available that are risk-free and very easy to keep clean.

Also, you can line the inside of your wire wheel with a piece of cardboard, (you can cut a piece from an old breakfast cereal pack). This will stop paws and tails slipping through the wires and can easily be changed when it gets a bit 'messy'.

Alternatively, there is a excellent new product on the market - the Wobust Wodent Wheel. It is extremely safe for most small furries. (Please note, Wodent Wheels are NOT recommended for gerbils or chinchillas).

Wodent Wheels are easily disassembled for cleaning and are constructed of tough, safe plastic with a stable base of heavy-gauge painted steel.

So, if you have a wire wheel, either line it or replace it with a plastic or wodent wheel - please put your pet's safety first!

At CavyRescue, we are always looking at ways to keep pets safely entertained - share your tips and experiences with us here
