Welcome

Welcome to the 6th issue of our newsletter! We have lots to mention including a recent visit to a working farm to help some ratties!

VISIT TO MUDCHUTE by Stella Hulott

In January we had an email from a very distressed lady called Debbie who lived in Bromley-by-Bow in London. She was concerned about the conditions that three rat boys were living in at Mudchute City Farm.

The Farm is a host to all sorts of animals from cows and horses to ducks and chickens to rats and chinchillas and is self-funded, so money is sparse.

Debbie tried to extricate the rats from the farm herself but they were loathe to give them up as the rats proved popular with visitors, especially special needs children as the rat boys were so friendly.

Debbie went in to the Farm every week to clean out the boys (who had been housed on straw) and also took along supplementary dietary foods but felt that she was getting nowhere.

I rang the Farm Manager a couple of times and he promised to provide better bedding for the chaps, a better diet etc. However, Debbie reported back that his promise wasn’t been seen through.

In the end, I met up with Debbie one afternoon and we went along to meet Tom, the Farm Manager, to look at and discuss the rats.

The boys were all very healthy but their living conditions and environment certainly needed improvements. After spending a good hour and a half with Tom, he agreed to all my suggestions, such as adding heating to the boys’ room; shade for hot days; using the correct bedding (we gave him a bale of Finacard cardboard bedding which we use) etc.

He also agreed to have a designated person to look after and clean the rats out rather than a host of volunteers who stuck all animals on sawdust and straw, no matter what species they were!

Thankfully Tom was very receptive to my suggestions and this was followed up by a Rat Care pack we sent him. Debbie is still visiting Mudchute to keep me updated and I plan to speak to Tom again soon to see how it is going.

A big thank you to Debbie for alerting us to this.

CavyRescue in the News

The past few weeks we have received some more positive ratty publicity!

Locally we were on Meridian TV talking about out Ratless Rat Show and also local radio talking about the Rat Insurance that now have access to.

Our local news paper - The Kent Messenger - did a double page spread on us highlighting how we are fund raising and looking for land to build on our planned Rodent Sanctuary. So if you have a bit of land to spare or know someone who does, please let us know!

We also wrote an article for Pets At Home - the nationwide pet shop - for their staff magazine which was very positively received. It was about the correct way to introduce ratties to each other so hopefully the staff will pass on what they lhave earned to customers in their stores!

Help the Bears - WSPA Advert

The farming of bears for the bile is one of the most intense forms of animal suffering that exists today. Trapped in a squalid cage for up to ten years, bears cry out in pain as they endure the continuous agony of having their bile drained from an open wound to their stomach. WSPA, the World Society for the Protection of Animals, is involved with extensive projects that aim to utterly eradicate this cruel practice. Yet it is only through the donations of our supporters that we are able to proceed. Click here to show your support
