Newsletter

Welcome

Welcome to the latest issue of our newsletter! We have lots to mention including an exciting Charity Auction on behalf of three charities where you can buy some gorgeous, special World Cup celebratory hammocks and stuff for your rats!

Site Update

Stel is running www.ratrescue.co.uk which we are running as a Web Log or Blog. This will share the insights into running Cavyrescue and provide background into the day to day running of the rescue. Rather than emailing to see how we are – it can take me some time to plough through all the emails we get - you can visit the Blog - and add your own comments too! We hope you find it informative.

CavyRescue in the News

The past few weeks we have received some more positive ratty publicity!

We were interviewed for The Times Magazine this week, we are in a feature called "Someone has to do it..." Not sure when it will appear, but it will be on a Saturday.

We keep being told we are on Meridian TV although we have not had a camera crew around for ages so not sure if this is old footage or people are getting confused.

We have also been approached to feature in a potential new TV programme about Pets and their relationship with their owners!. Not sure if this will get off the ground but it could be good publicity for us at some point in the future.

Furniture for your Fuzzies – Charity Auction

Fuzzbutt – who kindly donated some hammocks as prizes to our Ratless Rat Show – are holding Fuzzbutt Charity Auctions where you can bid for some gorgeous and unique furniture for your kids!

Rache – the talented ratty lover who makes these – says: “To celebrate the imminent launch of Fuzzbutt Cage Comforts, and also the launch of the World Cup, we present to you three of our products made in a one-off fabric not used for any of our other products.

“We support four animal charities - Cavy Rescue, PACT Animal Sanctuary, Second Chance Animal Trust, and the British Federation of Ferret Welfares. Proceeds from these three auctions will be divided equally between these four charities.

“Please tell as many people as you can, the more bids we get, the more money we raise!”

The Auctions are due to go live very soon – click here to check when it starts!

KEEPING YOUR FURRIES COOL IN THE HOT WEATHER

With Summer here (apparently!), make sure that your furries don’t suffer from the heat..here are some quick tips to get you started:

  • For guineas and rabbits, make sure that their hutch is shaded - put a sun umbrella over the top of the hutch if necessary
  • Freeze a plastic bottle full of water and then put it in their hutch/run so that they can lay on it if they get too hot. Do not use something flat to freeze as the guinea or rabbit could lie on it and literally freeze their bits off (this has actually happened)
  • Give your rats frozen peas to cool them down – they are like rat lollipops!
  • Keep their room well ventilated - put a fan in there if necessary together with a bowl of water nearby to help humidity - and keep the curtains/blinds shut to reduce direct sunlight

And, of course, as with all animals, make sure that fresh water is freely available. If your animal does appear to be suffering from heatstroke – a tell tale sign that they are getting over hot is that their ears go red – move them to a cooler location, dampen them with lukewarm water (not cold water as the shock may kill them) and call your vet immediately.

Help the Bears - WSPA Advert

The farming of bears for the bile is one of the most intense forms of animal suffering that exists today. Trapped in a squalid cage for up to ten years, bears cry out in pain as they endure the continuous agony of having their bile drained from an open wound to their stomach. WSPA, the World Society for the Protection of Animals, is involved with extensive projects that aim to utterly eradicate this cruel practice. Yet it is only through the donations of our supporters that we are able to proceed. Click here to show your support
