Rat Rescue :: Pet Virkon

Pet Virkon proved effective against VHD

One of the most devastating diseases in rabbits is Viral Haemorrhagic Disease, or VHD. It is highly contagious, and generally fatal - 95 per cent of rabbits which catch it will die.

Poor hygiene is an important factor in the spread of the disease, and keeping a rabbit's hutch, cage or run clean is essential. A product should be used which will give animals the maximum protection possible.

Antec International, the leading international infection control specialists, have developed a cleaner and disinfectant specifically for the pet market; Pet Virkon. This, says the company, has been proved to be effective against all the viruses harmful to animals, including those which cause VHD.

VHD is most commonly passed from animal to animal by droppings, by direct contact between rabbits, or by contact with contaminated feed bowls, bedding and hutches. All these, says Antec, can be cleaned and disinfected by using Pet Virkon, applied either by sponging or with a trigger spray bottle.

Although Pet Virkon is a very effective disinfectant, it is entirely safe to use, for the environment, for animals and for owners. Handlers are advised to wash their hands in Pet Virkon solution before and after handling rabbits, to avoid picking up and transmitting infection.

Pet Virkon - 3-in-1 cleaner, disinfectant and shampoo. For use with all birds, animals and reptiles

What is Virkon?

Virkon is a unique disinfectant/cleaner/shampoo. It is manufactured by Antec International, a British company, who are world leaders in biosecurity. Virkon is the most proven livestock disinfectant in the world.

It is a pink beige coloured powder which dissolves readily in water to make a solution that is powerful enough to kill and deactivate all important bacterial, viral and fungal disease causing organisms, and yet is safe enough to be used as an animal shampoo and for helping with skin problems. It is the first new concept in disinfectant in 40 years - and is capable of overcoming the infection control problems of today.

How is it used?

This versatile product can be used to clean and disinfect all areas where animals are housed or handled; it can be applied directly to the animals skin, or used as a shampoo; used as a fog or mist to deactivate air borne organisms and for general cleansing, soaking or pre-wash of items ranging from feed bowls to litter trays, from toys to bedding.

Why is it needed?

Micro-organisms are a real threat, causing many diseases in animals and humans. Virkon is proven to be 100% effective against a vast range of disease causing organisms including parvovirus, kennel cough (Bordatella bronchiseptica), Para influenza virus, Canine herpes virus, Canine adenovirus, distemper, rabies, cat flu, Campylobacter, E coli, Salmonella, Trichophyton spp, (ringworm), feline calicivirus, viral haemorrhagic disease of rabbits, poxviruses, candida albicans, Myxomatosis, Aspergillus sp etc.

Who can benefit from it?

Anyone who cares for the health and well-being of their animals, birds & reptiles and of the people who come into contact with them. People who use Virkon range from the owner of a single small pet to people who look after large numbers of animals, birds or reptiles, and from hospitals and dental practices, to veterinary surgeries.

Where is it used?

In the home, kennels, catteries, poultry houses, aviaries, snake and reptile houses, piggeries, zoos etc. Following the label instructions, Virkon is highly effective in cleaning and disinfecting hard surfaces, fabrics, carpets and clothing.

What makes it different?

Most disinfectants have a problem - they are often toxic, requiring special handling; others are just plain ineffective. Virkon wins by being easy to use, versatile enough for all your needs, and very very effective.
